Artificial Intelligence
What do you think of when you hear the words artificial intelligence (AI)? This hot topic continues to grow in usage and users. My level of knowledge of artificial intelligence before what it has become today was from popular movies such as The Terminator, Her, and M3GAN. All of these movies have the same premise, an AI technology created with good intentions only to follow with doom and gloom. "Her" is, in my personal opinion, the best take on AI. The film follows a man who develops a relationship with an artificially intelligent virtual assistant personified through a female voice. I remember thinking that it could be a possibility to see a future in where individuals seek out companionship through artificial intelligence but assumed it would be many years away. To me, the amount of data needed to become “intelligent” would be so much and so complex. Intelligent humans are created from years and years experiences happening to them daily. I thought it would be a long time to download a significant amount of data and program how to use all the information collected to create a perfect artificial intelligent entity.
Yet 10 years from the release of the film "Her," there are AI chat boxes and romantic simulators. When I finished watching the movie "Her" a decade ago, I remember thinking how sad and weird it would be for humans to feel attachment and even fall in love with an AI program. Now here we are an I saw a commercial this year for an AI friend that reminds me the future the movie took place in was much closer than I had anticipated. I also have grown to be more understanding and accepting of AI integrating into our society, it just shows how social we as humans are and crave connection.
How I Use AI
Present day, I use AI in my professional career in the form of ChatGPT for brainstorming and Canva's AI image generator option when creating projects. I like to use ChatGPT to come up with funny puns and Canva to generate hilarious images for posters. I do think that AI is something I will continue to use. It is not going away and is only going to keep progressing so I know eventually a specific AI function or program for libraries will probably be adapted regularly into my job one way or another.
Are you using AI?
Don't use AI? Or is it that you do not know you are already using AI? After learning a bit more about AI technologies, I found out it has already existed in forms other than art generators or virtual assistants that I have been utilizing for years. I have an Apple Music subscription which have functions on it to recommend similar artists or even similar songs to what you are currently listening to. Music recommendation is a form of AI. Do you use social media or shop on the internet? The posts you see and the perfectly curated advertisements are yet again algorithms processed by AI technologies. Although there are healthy concerns over use of AI, I do recommend everyone to play around with it because it is useful and can be quite fun.
